8. VILLAFRANCA-PORTOMARÍN

Today I don’t know how to start my chronicle. I don’t know whether to talk about the landscapes, the toughness of the stage or about the weather. I’m completely lost. Today’s effort was like never before. At 07.00 I was heading for Pico de O Cebreiro, people said this is the queen stage of the Camino. Once again, I haven’t slept a wink. I’m suffering more than I ever thought, it’s so hard and the weather is horrible that every morning I feel like a coward. Today even more, it was just my bike and I against the O Cebreiro, a summit of 1350m with 16% ramps.
This morning as soon as I checked the weather forecast for today I was devastated. Guess what? Snowstorm again! I left the hotel and after 30 kms of cycling in the dark of the breaking dawn I come across a car for the first time this morning. I was at Las Herrerías by the skirt of the O Cebreiro. I asked the driver how far was the summit. He just laughed and told me not to worried about that because today I was not going to get to the top…he didn’t know how stubborn I could be. Little by little and frightened I started the way up. When I was at 850m it started to snow so heavily that I couldn’t see the path. At 950m I thought on turning back but it took me so much effort to get where I was that I decided to try cycling to Piedrafita de Camino at 1050m. Every time I pedalled I was just hoping for a car to materialize to stop this agony. But guess what? No cars. I made a break at Piedrafita to have a hot drink. At the bar, I made the same question as before, how far to the top? And I got the same answer, not today. Due to my persistence, Olga the waitress told me that it was only 4kms. What’s that compared to the 40 kms I had already done? I had to give it a chance. After a long, gruelling and devastating cycling I reached the summit. There was just enough visibility to see the sign and then a vertiginous descent to the next peak, the Alto del Poyo. I was about to reach this point, where the descent to Tricastela starts, when someone stopped me. It was Josu from Portomarín, a Union Fenosa worker. He stayed with me until the snowplough cleaned the road. Even more he picked me up in his 4x4 and drove me to the other side of Alto del Poyo. To be honest, I wasn’t sure about cycling these last 5 kms. I was exhausted, I couldn’t feel my fingers nor my toes and my eyes where swallowed because of the cold. The clips in my shoes were so frozen that they didn’t fit in the pedals. Definitely, the Camino is full of angels. You never know when they are going to come into sight.
Thanks to Josu I was able to go further in my way and finally stopped in Portomarín, by the way a beautiful place.
Now, I’m sitting by the fireplace at the highly recommended Restaurant “El Mirador” trying to warm me up. My face still hurts and my eyes are swallowed. It’s been really, really tough. I think it’s been the toughest one. I have bruises in my inner tight and a haemorrhage in my knee. But this is nothing. The most important is to feel your support. I can count on it to follow my way. With your support others will follow their own way and will success in their fight against their illness. Thanks again for all your support and your donations.
The worst part of the day has been reaching my limits. Today could have been the end for me.
The best was Josu. If I’m still here is thank to you. I prey to God to give enough strength to finish. I’ll almost there but I’m also utterly exhausted and up to my limits.

Tomorrow more.

Otra noche que no he pegado ojo.

Otra vez no!
Hoy podía no haber terminado.
