3. TORRES DEL RIO - SANTO DOMINGO DE LA CALZADA

Finally I am at Santo Domigo de la Calzada and it is only now after two hour sitting by the heater that I’m starting to feel warm. I’m at restaurant Arcaya, enjoying their wi-fi network, the local wine and a marvellous pincho of tortilla

This morning it took me a while to set off. It was raining cats and dogs and I was waiting for the storm to pass. At 08:00 it was still pouring but I couldn’t wait anymore. I had to meet Alicia, my sister-in-law at Campo de Golf Municipal de Logroño. If I wanted to meet her I couldn’t delay my departure any longer.
I started my cycling feeling really satisfied with my equipment. I was warm and dry as the brand maker assured me. However as soon as I passed Viana it started to rain buckets first and it snowed a bit later. It was that much that I soon looked like a tea bag. Without no doubt, my equipment had a limit and mine reached it during the morning.
Once in Logroño, it took me a while to get to the golf club. It’s on the outskirts next to the Camino. By then I was so badly cold and wet that I didn’t even stop to visit the city. I just pass through the city centre to confirm its charm and beauty but that was all. When I arrived to the golf clubhouse I wanted to die (for the first time today). My hands as well as my knees were shaking. Fortunately they allowed me to take a shower and dry my equipment. Thanks to their kindness my stage didn’t finish in Logroño and I was able to continue my way.
After a strong breakfast, Serrano ham, eggs and chips, I said good bye to my sister-in-law and her nice friends and I set off again. Not sure about what I was facing I headed to Navarrete. Once there, I decided to continue to Nájera where I arrived once again completely soaked. I comforted myself with a hot coffee and when I was about to head to the public hostel, the sun shyly made its appearance between the clouds. I asked a local guy how far was Santo Domingo and he assured me that it was just 20 kms ahead with a tiny slope at the beginning and then a flat and easy way to cycle.
Logically I trusted him and at 13:30 I was riding my bike once again.
10 kms after leaving Nájera, I kept thinking about the local guy and all his family and not in a nice way. A tiny slope….my ass!! From Nájera to Santo Domingo the road was a continuous uphill. Moreover a heavy snowstorm made its appearance when I was 10 kms far from my destination with 70kms/hr winds and huge fluffy snowflakes. Believe me… they really hurt!!
So, what was going to be a pleasant walk according to the local guy, it turned out to be a 3 hours long agony.
Fortunately, the public hostel is convenient and the village is lovely.
Now I need a rest. Forecast for tomorrow is that bad that I'm not sure if I will be able to leave. Pray for the weather to give me a break because I don’t want to stop now.
The best thing of the day was the Club de Golf de Logroño and the kindness of the staff working there. I highly recommend to stop there for breakfast or well…..just in case of emergency.
The worst part has been the continuously temptation of giving up. The cold, the cold, the wind, the wind, the wind, the wind, the rain and the snow!! And of course having the feeling that my bike lacks hundreds of gears.

No quiero parar ahora.
