2. PAMPLONA - TORRES DEL RIO

It was 06:30 when my cousin woke me up. I was that tired that I didn’t know where I was. I had a good rest but I could feel the stiffness in my legs. At 07:30 and after having breakfast with my family I set off for Torres del Rio. First through the University and then Cizur. A tiny slope and my legs were about to explote. Maybe yesterday I pushed myself too hard...
Through muddy paths I headed for Alto del Perdón and a hard penance started for me. When I was about to give in, Carlos a neighbor from Zaraquiegui made a sudden appearance. He was an angel to my hell!
This sort of things is what makes the Camino such a special place. While he was kindly showing me an alternative route to cross the Alto del Perdón, Txumari* from “La Botica de la Abuela” appeared to confirm my madness and to wish me “Buen Camino” of course without any of his famous home-made remedies.
To get to the Alto del Perdon summit has been really, really hard. I thought that yesterday I went through the hardest peaks and that the rest to come was going to be a path of roses but to my surprise this stage has been an absolutely torture for my legs. Moreover, the first 45 kms were foggy and cold (4ºC). A continue up and down. It’s been exhausting and bitter cold!!
I was forced to make a break at Puente de la Reina where I had a pincho of tortilla and a delicious hot coffee at Café Bar Very. Consuelo, the waitress was lovely and attentive. Everything was wonderful and only for 2€!
The next stop along the way was at Estella. The historic city centre is a jewel and worth the visit. Sadly it was too early for the bars to be full of pintxos. So without a bite to eat I headed to Bodegas Irache, a famous vineyard halfway the Camino. I wanted to check if the famous Wine Fountain really exists...and it does!! According to the rules you can drink to calm your thirst but you can not bottle the wine. If you want a bottle of wine there is a shop where you can buy it. After 40 kms of distress, fog and cold I’ve arrived exhausted and thirsty and naturally I helped myself...well actually I made myself at home. I’m really glad to know that there are still people in the world with a generous heart!
At 14:30 I arrived to Los Arcos just a few minutes before passing out. Thank goodness I’ve found a bakery, Orgipán that happened to have a bar within serving Menú del Peregrino. 11€ for five starters and five mains to choose from. I went for the spaguetti bolognese and rabas de calamar, a clara de limón and a glass of local wine. It’s perfect! It has given me enough energy to face the last kilometres of the day towards Torres del Rio.
Suffering is the word I’d choose to summarise this stage although thanks to Carlos, Txumari, Consuelo and Mario from Bakery Orgipán I have reached Torres del Río. Breathless and completely knackered but I did it.
The worst thing about today is the pain in my botton and my legs. The best is the mix of loneliness and suffering that invites you to think about life carefully. It’s just two days but I’m starting to understand the secrets of the Camino.

Aunque he descansado bien noto las piernas cargadas.
Tras 40km sufriendo, con niebla y frío he llegado exhausto y sediento y claro, me he saciado.
Reventado, pero he llegado.
