5. BURGOS - SAHAGÚN

This evening I’d like to start my entry just highlighting that today is World Cancer Day.
This morning I set off at 6:30 after saying good-bye to Luismari and not knowing where I would finish today’s stage. Everything would depend on my knee. For a change I came back to my well-known routine of going up hill once again! As soon as you leave Burgos there are two important steep slopes. The highest one is Alto de Mostelares with 16% ramps and 18% descents. All the way from there to Carrión de los Condes is quite plain but spread with ups and downs. By the way Carrión monastery, nowadays a 4 starts hotel, was amazing. Around 13:00 I arrived to Carrión and to make the best of the good weather I decided not to stop there. Apart for the headwind, the sky was clear most of the time and finally the sun shined to stay with me for a while.
My knee was still hurting but it wasn’t that bad so I decided to take the risk and continue all the way to Sahagún. This town is for those starting it in Roncesvalles, the geographical halfway point of the Camino.
At that moment I didn’t realise that my decision would mean 40 extra kms of “some” suffering. As soon as I was cycling again my knee started to hurt more. Just 10 kms after leaving Carrión I ran out of food and drink (Thanks Mimmo for your protein bars) and of course there wasn’t a glucose tablet left. At halfway I couldn’t stand the pain any more. I was so badly in pain that I was about to collapse so I desperately decided to leave the bridleway and move to the main road looking for some help. I don’t know if it was one of these things that people said mysteriously happened in the Camino or the destiny but no car passed in 10 mins. These were really hard moments, moments of introspection and self-reflexion. I have got to know myself better since the start of the Camino. 12 kms before Sahagún there is a small hamlet called Lédigos. With great effort I pushed my bike to there aiming to find some help and it’s when Asun appeared. Her first reaction to my sight was fear. She invited me to her house, fed me, gave me water and took care of me until I was strong enough to continue. She was like an angel in the Camino.
When I was ready I cycled full of fright to Sahagún. It’s been a very loooooong journey, an end of stage bittersweet and hard, very hard.
After stamping my passport at the public hostel I headed to Casa Simón to eat something. By the way it’s the only bar with wi-fi connection in town. Simón and his father Luis treated me like a king and the huevos rotos con jamón and the callos I ate there had been like a magic potion for me.
The best of the day was Asun and to know that when you feel you can’t do anymore and decide to throw the towel there is always somewhere there to offer you a hand. You just need to be brave and ask for help.
The worst was the unnecessary suffering due to my miscalculation when planning the stage. I hope not to do it again!
Tomorrow more

P.S. In a day like this I’d like to ask all my blog followers and those still waiting to do a donation not to miss such a special date. Cancer is something that in the future will affect 1 out of 3 people and nowadays the only effective weapon to fight against it is investigation. The more resources we dedicate to investigation the more people will succeed in their fight against this illness. Don’t miss this opportunity. A pound can make the difference. Let yours make it!

Thank you very much for all your love, support and encouraging messages. I really appreciate it!

Para variar otra vez he empezado subiendo!
Allí he entrado a pedir ayuda y entonces ha aparecido "Asun".
