It’s been a few days since I arrived to Santiago after my Camino. It’s been a long way in distance but not in time. It’s been very special and now it’s time to take stock of it when feelings and memories are still fresh in my mind. During the last days I had tried my best aiming to share with you all the unique and intimate feelings I had experienced.<br />
I can’t deny that the Camino is art, gastronomy, mystify, religion and friendship. It’s not only an endless shade of feelings and perceptions but much more. We can find as much shades as pilgrims walk it. However all the Caminos have something in common, the effort, the sacrifice and the finding of yourself. Nobody who had walked the Camino can deny that at some point they had experience a way back to themselves and even for a short period of time they had also felt that all the obligations and daily life attachments shifts to the background.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">Santiago's Cathedral keeps the apostle remains</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
At this point you all know the reasons behind my Camino. I am paying tribute to a very special person, and not only her but also her family and my family; our families. Moreover, I aimed during this short period to unselfishly dedicate my effort to the others and I must confess that it has been the most rewarding experience I have ever had in my life.<br />
<div>
It’s been tough days full of suffering, loneliness, introspection, meditation and fear but also full of happiness. I can confirm without any doubt that the Camino is something special. All pilgrims say so. Doing it during the wintertime made it more special, much more special but also much more harder. I have met all sorts of people, amazing ones, remarkable, discreet, the formal type and the jolly type. All of them were different but all of them with a point of craziness that makes them such a marvellous people. In our daily life they are difficult to find but it seems that the Camino is full of them. Each of them has shaped my Camino turning it into an unforgettable one, a gift for life. It’s difficult to find the words to describe them without bringing tears to my eyes.<br />
Some of them used to say that the magic of the Camino lays on the loneliness moments you enjoy every now and then. Because it’s in these moments when we found ourselves. It’s that mix of sensations and feelings what shows you the real Camino, which doesn’t lead you to Santiago but to yourself, to the deepest of your self-being. This Camino remains us how little we are but at the same time how potentially big we can be. It also remains us that maybe the success in our lives is not to find our own success but to help others to find it out. To dedicate our effort to those we love is a great gift but to feel and know that at the same time we are helping other people, anonymous ones, and making a difference in their lives is a bless. <br />

We should live a life and not let the life live trough us. We don´t choose a live, we live it! We normally just go through life leaving behind us a story, just another simple story of someone who dedicate most of his or her life to complain without noticing that life is slipping through their fingers and not being aware that this times would never come back and that they are doing no more that wallowing in their grief. But at the same time, that same life is continuously offering us lots of opportunities that as Luismari said, are like breaking dawns. The Camino is one of those opportunities life offers us. We can take it or leave it but it’s there. I know this is just one more opportunity that life has offered me but this time I have decided to take it.<br />
During my Camino I suffered during the day and went to bed sore and wounded every night. Everyday I felt the loneliness, the silence and the fear. Everyday I felt the happiness of arriving to my destination point, the happiness of giving something without getting nothing in return and the happiness of counting the minutes for starting my next stage. I also felt the curiosity for learning, discovering and feeling something new. I felt the urge for sharing, for giving and for learning in depth about myself.<br />
The Camino de Santiago is just another stage in our live, just a stage, but a special one. Now I feel happy and proud for having done this Camino that it’s no more than another stage in the life I still have in front of me.<br />
During the Camino, came to my mind all those things that really matter, normally little things that pass unnoticed day after day. Tito said that pilgrims learn during the Camino how little is needed to happily live. Now I don’t feel the need to have but the need to be. The same way I feel the need to give but not to receive or get anything in return. During eight days all my life was in two small panniers and on top of my pedals. Nothing compared to what we have in our everyday life however I have learned from the Camino and its people that the less you have the more you share. The Camino is also an example of solidarity, the sort of solidarity we are in need for. <br />
It’s true I have missed the company of other pilgrims or having more time to spend on the Camino enjoying it or even sharing my concerns and experiences at the end of each stage with someone but this was my Camino, this is what I chose. <br />
A Camino of solidarity, homage, introspection, search, sacrifice, dedication and disinterested. I won’t change a bit of it. Not of this Camino, but I have to come back. Next time it will be without a route, without deadlines and without stages. Only with time enough to discover the Camino again, its landscapes, its people, its secrets and its experiences. <br />
In life every path we take always starts with a small step, a small one but one we need to take. No matter where you are going, always a first step needs to be taken and that’s the way, step by step how we enjoy the little things life offers to us. I hope to have been able to put into words all this experience and at least arouse your curiosity. <br />
<br />

I can’t and I don’t want to finish this chronicle without mention my wife Loreto and my sons Nacho, Fernando and Juan. They turned my crazy idea into reality. They believed in me and in this project and unconditionally gave me all their support. They have somehow done their own Camino. They had suffered with me and because of me but especially Loreto. I have stolen her sleep, what it’s priceless and gave her lot of reasons to worry about. She has also been a pilgrim. This is her blog because it’s thanks to her effort that this has been possible. Everyday she has patiently waited for my chronicles, translated them and update the blog so all of you could follow my adventure. I would not be honest if I did not include Fernando who has helped her in a daily basis. He’s become her favourite English teacher! They all have been my comfort and a continuous support. My sons are good aid, each on their way, but the three of them. They have also been pilgrims in my Camino. </div>
<div>
There is still a stage pending, from Santiago to Finisterre. I’ll do it. The motive behind it it’s a promise. So this blog is not finished yet. This is just the next to last entry. In the meantime, my Justgiving page will remain open so you can still make a donation for the cause I decided to support with my challenge. We can’t wait to others to solve a problem that affects all of us and that sadly will affect one out of three along our lives. <br />
Once again I just want to say a big thank you to those who have been following me and cycling the Camino as my fellow pilgrims. God bless you and may St. James protect you.<br />

He
podido conocer gente admirable, gente reservada, gente seria, gente abierta y
gente alegre.

As soon as I left Portomarín I could feel the tiredness of the more than 700 kms I had already cycled. For me today’s first 9 kms had been the queen stage of the Camino. On the other hand and later on, all the way to Melide has been the most stunning part of the Camino. In my way, I crossed through a series of tiny hamlets and parishes. The rain and the landscape mixed with the smells of wet forest and the always-present eucalyptus was the perfect combination. Galicia is gorgeous!</div>

Before getting to Melide I had a flat-tyre. With numb and cold hands I was trying to repair it. Once more, an angel of the Camino made her appearance. She was Hiromi Morita, a Japanese lady travelling with a friend whom materialised from nowhere. They approached me intrigued by my presence. They were amazed with me, well with the cycling solo the way thing in winter and of course took some pictures with me. They stayed with me and cheer me up while I repaired the bike making it more bearable. Tito, the pilgrim form Zaragoza said that the Camino shows you how little you need to be happy. Here it is another example! It’s the happiest flat-tyre of my life! Thanks Hiromi...and Buen Camino!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
We said our good-byes like if we had known each other for a while and I continued my way to Melide. Once there and following the tradition I had Pulpo with Ribeiro, the crispy, fruity and tasting local wine at Bar Adega Mandil. Without any doubt the best one I had ever tried. It made me cry!</div>

Full of energy I headed to Arzua, this was to be my end of stage for today. My intention was to spend the night here and have a good rest to face my last stage of the Camino but apparently Saint James had other plans for me. He somehow wanted me to finish the Camino today so I had no choice but to follow his commands. An extra 40 kms full of pain and suffering but worth every pedal because at 17:00 I arrived to Santiago overwhelmed with emotions. It’s been such an amazing moment that I cannot find the words to express all the emotions, feelings and thoughts that crossed my mind at that moment. The only thing I am sure of is that I’m here, I don’t know how but here I am and that it’s been Saint James the one who helped me all the way to get here. I need to time to understand my feelings. I need some privacy before I’m be able to share with you what pilgrims feel the moment they arrive to Santiago. I need a moment for myself but mainly I need to rest. It’s been very intense, with a lot of sacrifice and fighting against the odds. No sleeping at all and managing to keep going even when strengths abandon you. I guess it’s been one of the toughest experiences I had faced in my life but at the same time the most gratifying one. After a good rest and once I organise my ideas and feelings I plan to add a new entry to the blog. I aim to call it “Santiago - Santiago, the way to yourself”.</div>

The best of today’s stage was the pleasure of meeting my Japanese friends. The view of them arriving with their ponchos, completely soaked, tired but happy has been one of the sweetest memories of the Camino. Well, and of course the pulpo and the hospitality of the people from Bar Adega Mandil in Melide.<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I don’t know how to start my chronicle. I don’t know whether to talk about the landscapes, the toughness of the stage or about the weather. I’m completely lost. Today’s effort was like never before. At 07.00 I was heading for Pico de O Cebreiro, people said this is the queen stage of the Camino. Once again, I haven’t slept a wink. I’m suffering more than I ever thought, it’s so hard and the weather is horrible that every morning I feel like a coward. Today even more, it was just my bike and I against the O Cebreiro, a summit of 1350m with 16% ramps. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This morning as soon as I checked the weather forecast for today I was devastated. Guess what? Snowstorm again! I left the hotel and after 30 kms of cycling in the dark of the breaking dawn I come across a car for the first time this morning. I was at Las Herrerías by the skirt of the O Cebreiro. I asked the driver how far was the summit. He just laughed and told me not to worried about that because today I was not going to get to the top…he didn’t know how stubborn I could be. Little by little and frightened I started the way up. When I was at 850m it started to snow so heavily that I couldn’t see the path. At 950m I thought on turning back but it took me so much effort to get where I was that I decided to try cycling to Piedrafita de Camino at 1050m. Every time I pedalled I was just hoping for a car to materialize to stop this agony. But guess what? No cars. I made a break at Piedrafita to have a hot drink. At the bar, I made the same question as before, how far to the top? And I got the same answer, not today. Due to my persistence, Olga the waitress told me that it was only 4kms. What’s that compared to the 40 kms I had already done? I had to give it a chance. After a long, gruelling and devastating cycling I reached the summit. There was just enough visibility to see the sign and then a vertiginous descent to the next peak, the Alto del Poyo. I was about to reach this point, where the descent to Tricastela starts, when someone stopped me. It was Josu from Portomarín, a Union Fenosa worker. He stayed with me until the snowplough cleaned the road. Even more he picked me up in his 4x4 and drove me to the other side of Alto del Poyo. To be honest, I wasn’t sure about cycling these last 5 kms. I was exhausted, I couldn’t feel my fingers nor my toes and my eyes where swallowed because of the cold. The clips in my shoes were so frozen that they didn’t fit in the pedals. Definitely, the Camino is full of angels. You never know when they are going to come into sight. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thanks to Josu I was able to go further in my way and finally stopped in Portomarín, by the way a beautiful place. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, I’m sitting by the fireplace at the highly recommended Restaurant “El Mirador” trying to warm me up. My face still hurts and my eyes are swallowed. It’s been really, really tough. I think it’s been the toughest one. I have bruises in my inner tight and a haemorrhage in my knee. But this is nothing. The most important is to feel your support. I can count on it to follow my way. With your support others will follow their own way and will success in their fight against their illness. Thanks again for all your support and your donations. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The worst part of the day has been reaching my limits. Today could have been the end for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best was Josu. If I’m still here is thank to you. I prey to God to give enough strength to finish. I’ll almost there but I’m also utterly exhausted and up to my limits. </div>

Otra noche que no he pegado ojo. </div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Me enfrentaba al mítico O Cebreiro. 1350m con pendientes del 16%. </span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Otra vez no! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gracias Josu. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hoy podía no haber terminado. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lo mejor Josu. Si sigo en el Camino es por ti. Te deseo lo mejor. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>

Luismari, the Burgos’s innkeeper, used to say that life gives us lots of opportunities and that they are like breaking dawns, unique and shooting. There will be more, but different ones. If we stop for a second, just for a second, even if we just wink, we’ll miss that breaking dawn. There will be others, but will be different. With the opportunities it happens the same. I saw an opportunity and I’m making the best of it to honour someone very special to me and at the same time to support a great cause. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Talking about Spain is talking about its landscapes, its food, its culture and its people. The Camino includes all of that and more. I’ll keep that “more”. It’s been a few days since I’m suffering the harsh weather, the muscular pain and the loneliness but it doesn’t matter. It’s my opportunity, it’s the one I chose. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today’s stage started with the ascent to the pass of the Cruz del Hierro (Iron Cross). At its summit and by the foot of the cross, pilgrims leave a stone that they’ve been carrying since they started the Camino. This stone represents the load and burden that we bear in every day of our lives. We offer that load to the Saint and we ask for a wish. It’s a great change in our lives. Today to get there I encountered a snowstorm with 70kms/h winds. I cycled uphill 1565m unaccompanied through a road covered with snow. It was only 25 kms but so intense that I was frightened, completely scared. I didn’t see a soul during the way up and at times it was difficult to follow the path. At the summit I left the stone that represented all the filthy things of my life and that my son Juan specially prepared for me. There, at the highest point and in the middle of the snow I left my load… and asked for a wish. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the way down and in the middle of the snowstorm I met a group of pilgrims that cheered me on and encouraged me to go on. This gesture gave me just enough strength to make an emergency landing to “La Posada del Peregrino” in El Acebo. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At my arrival there wasn’t any need to talk. They offered me a seat by the fireplace and fed me with a hot onion and ham soup. They even took my clothes off. I’ll give Miguel, the man in charge an A***. By the way, he was from Navarra like me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once I was recovered, I continued my way to Ponferrada where I aimed to finish my stage. I was completely knackered. The city is amazing but it was a shame that Rubén, the innkeeper, wasn’t very friendly. He didn’t want me to put the bike inside the public hostel. I told him that my bike is my travel partner and where I sleep, she sleeps. But he said “absolutely no”. I'm so stubborn that I decided to continue to Villafranca del Bierzo where I booked myself in a hotel. It’s been another 35 kms but I don’t regret it because María José has treated me like only mums can do it. Once again, this was one of those weird Camino things. Now I’m counting the minutes until dinner and then to bed. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best of today is been the emotion of leaving the stone at the top of the mountain. Juan, we have made history! And of course the caring love of Miguel and María José. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The worst has been all the way up to the cross. It’s been a nightmare. I would also give a cross to Rubén. I didn’t expect a reaction like that. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow more. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
P.S. Casillas my dear friend, you were waiting for blood, sweat and tears to make your donation. I can confirm you that I’ve sweated litres and litres, I’ve cried out even more litres and that I have a haemorrhage in one of my knees and on my privates. I’m waiting!! </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Mañana mas. </span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
PD.

SAHAGÚN-ASTORGA<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today’s stage was exactly the same as yesterdays. That’s the way Castilla is, a vast plain full of ups and downs. Since early morning pedalling was terribly tough. I could feel all the tiredness accumulated during these days…pain was once again my journey mate. My badly damaged knee, one of my abductor, lots of grazes and my buttocks remind me every step, every minute and every second how hard the Camino is. Today I’ve done 120 kms and for 120 times I only wanted to give up. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
10 kms before León the weather got worse. The wind and a cloudy sky had made me remember the toughness of the stage between Torres del Rio and Santo Domingo. I reckon that it was that bad that now I’m a little bit traumatised. I get goose bumps every time I think about that stage. I couldn’t stand it again. I guess this has been the reason to keep cycling once I arrived to León. Somehow I was trying to beat the bad weather by leaving it behind. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The good thing about Castilla is that the monotony of its landscape provides you with the perfect atmosphere to think. The last two stages have been very intense. Very intimating. Yesterday I talked to a friend about the toughness of doing solo the Camino. You don’t have a shoulder to cry on. Maybe that’s the reason for crying my eyes out over Castilian fields for hundreds of kms. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These two stages have also offered me a chance to sit back and take stock of my life. Six days ago I didn’t believe this could happen but now, six days later I thank God for such special and deep days. It’s been lots of hours and kilometres of reflection. Suffering turns us sentimental. We are more perceptive and appreciate all life’s little things that in our daily routines are normally missed out. To be a pilgrim means loneliness and meditation but also happiness. The happiness of knowing things start to get into perspective. To be a pilgrim offers us the chance to put a new spin into our lives. So I’m going to make the best of this and give it a chance. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The worst part of today’s stage has been the aim to give up, the cold, the wind, the cold, the wind, the cold, the wind and…..of course the aim of give up! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best: my fantastic family so far away but somehow pedalling next to me all the way long. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow more. </div>

P.S: It was that gruelling and I was in such a pain that when I saw a signal to Hotel-Spa Ciudad de Astorga I couldn’t stop myself. The hour I’ve spent in the spa was heavenly. Mavi from the hotel has been like a mother to me. Roberto from Bicis Roberto fitted my bicycle that was starting to suffer the test of time. To end up, a fantastic dinner in Pizzeria Venezia. c/ Marcelo Macias 6. Rice and pasta, pure energy for conquering the Cruz de Hierro.<br />
Well, just a little treat for me and my bike! Courtesy and courage are not mutually exclusive! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">_______________________________________________________________________________</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mañana mas. </div>

BURGOS - SAHAGÚN<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This evening I’d like to start my entry just highlighting that today is World Cancer Day. </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
This morning I set off at 6:30 after saying good-bye to Luismari and not knowing where I would finish today’s stage. Everything would depend on my knee. For a change I came back to my well-known routine of going up hill once again! As soon as you leave Burgos there are two important steep slopes. The highest one is Alto de Mostelares with 16% ramps and 18% descents. All the way from there to Carrión de los Condes is quite plain but spread with ups and downs. By the way Carrión monastery, nowadays a <a href="http://hostingnovapyme6.com/~sanzoilo/">4 starts hotel</a>, was amazing. Around 13:00 I arrived to Carrión and to make the best of the good weather I decided not to stop there. Apart for the headwind, the sky was clear most of the time and finally the sun shined to stay with me for a while. </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
My knee was still hurting but it wasn’t that bad so I decided to take the risk and continue all the way to Sahagún. This town is for those starting it in Roncesvalles, the geographical halfway point of the Camino. </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
At that moment I didn’t realise that my decision would mean 40 extra kms of “some” suffering. As soon as I was cycling again my knee started to hurt more. Just 10 kms after leaving Carrión I ran out of food and drink (Thanks Mimmo for your protein bars) and of course there wasn’t a glucose tablet left. At halfway I couldn’t stand the pain any more. I was so badly in pain that I was about to collapse so I desperately decided to leave the bridleway and move to the main road looking for some help. I don’t know if it was one of these things that people said mysteriously happened in the Camino or the destiny but no car passed in 10 mins. These were really hard moments, moments of introspection and self-reflexion. I have got to know myself better since the start of the Camino. 12 kms before Sahagún there is a small hamlet called Lédigos. With great effort I pushed my bike to there aiming to find some help and it’s when Asun appeared. Her first reaction to my sight was fear. She invited me to her house, fed me, gave me water and took care of me until I was strong enough to continue. She was like an angel in the Camino. </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
When I was ready I cycled full of fright to Sahagún. It’s been a very loooooong journey, an end of stage bittersweet and hard, very hard. </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
After stamping my passport at the public hostel I headed to <a href="http://casasimonsahagun.com/">Casa Simón</a> to eat something. By the way it’s the only bar with wi-fi connection in town. Simón and his father Luis treated me like a king and the <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">huevos rotos con jamón</a> and the <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">callos</a> I ate there had been like a magic potion for me. </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
The best of the day was Asun and to know that when you feel you can’t do anymore and decide to throw the towel there is always somewhere there to offer you a hand. You just need to be brave and ask for help. </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
The worst was the unnecessary suffering due to my miscalculation when planning the stage. I hope not to do it again! </div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow more </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">P.S. In a day like this I’d like to ask all my blog followers and those still waiting to do a donation not to miss such a special date. Cancer is something that in the future will affect 1 out of 3 people and nowadays the only effective weapon to fight against it is investigation. The more resources we dedicate to investigation the more people will succeed in their fight against this illness. Don’t miss this opportunity. A pound can make the difference. Let yours make it! </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Para variar otra vez he empezado subiendo! </span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Allí he entrado a pedir ayuda y entonces ha aparecido "Asun". </div>
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Mañana mas. </div>
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">PD. </span></div>

SANTO DOMINGO DE LA CALZADA - BURGOS<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yesterday when I was in my bed I could hear and feel the wind blowing. Once again I didn’t sleep a wink, this time fearing that today could be as bad as yesterday. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I woke up at 06:30 and shyly looked through the window with a mix of fear and respect. Thank goodness it wasn’t raining neither snowing. I’m sure that yesterday prayers helped to make it happen. When God closes a door, somewhere He opens a window. So, after having breakfast at Santo Domingo public hostel I decided to start today’s trip. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was 07:00 and still dark when I left the hostel. I had in mind to do as much kilometres as possible but without a fixed destination. Belorado, Villafranca de Oca, San Juan Ortega, Burgos…any of those would do the job as far as I could keep going my way. First lights of the day brought me an amazing landscape but an unsure weather forecast. Everything was white apart from a threatening dark grey sky. At the end, it was not that bad only sleet and wind but cold, freezing cold. By the way, as you all known I finally found the shoe covers I was looking for. Now I can confirm that after cycling 85 kms with below cero temperatures they don’t do their job. By Villafranca de Oca I couldn’t feel the tips of my toes anymore. But on the other hand, in Villafranca I ate a delicious <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">bocadillo of tortilla de chorizo</a> at Bar Villafranca, the first one you will find when you get here. It’s a mandatory stop before climbing the summit of Montes de Oca. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Between Santo Domingo and Villafranca it’s all uphill. From 650m to 900m high. Then another vicious hill where only after 300m you are already at 1.300m above sea level. It’s been terribly hard but a beautiful landscape. From the top I enjoyed the view of Castilian yellow fields. Well they weren’t actually yellow they were simply white. When I reached the summit of Montes de Oca I was completely knackered. I couldn’t feel the tip of my toes and had lot of pain in my knee, to be precise, in the back of my knee. I was in such pain that when I arrived Burgos I decided to surrender for the day. I gave myself over to Luismari, the innkepper of Burgos public hostel. He warmly welcomed me and I let out a couple of tears because I was very, very tired and in need of a home. Burgos hostel is more than a home and Luismari more than an innkeeper. He showed me where to secure my bike as well as all his bikes, two magnificent and expensive race bicycles. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Before I even thought about asking him why he had them he was telling me that last year he rode 25.000kms through the Camino!!! He showed me the log to guarantee that this was true. By the way, Luismari is 68 years old. I’m ashamed of complaining about my knee. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The hostel is highly recommended. Apart from the basic facilities it has washing machine, tumble dryer, vending machines, computers, resting area and only 50m from the Cathedral. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once I made myself home I met the Korean pilgrims that were rescued a few days ago by a helicopter in Roncesvalles. They are very brave and step by step they are doing their Camino. I have also met Alain from France, Sean from Canadá, Siro from Italy and Tito from Zaragoza. This evening I’ll go with them to mass at the cathedral and to have some <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">pintxos</a>. But I won't come back late because the hostel closes at 22:00. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have also met a pilgrim that has done the Camino ten times this year. Everytime he reaches Santiago he comes back to Roncesvalles and starts again. Yesterday I met Alfredo from Brasil He’s doing his tenth Camino. Since 2004 he comes every winter. Also Gerard, a French man who after retirement he comes every year. Like I was told the first day there is something about the Camino that makes you do it again and again. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best thing about today has been Luismari, Burgos’ hostel and the bocadillo of tortilla I had in Villafranca. The worst was the wind and the snow I encounter just 10kms before Burgos. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow more </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Afortunadamente hoy sólo he tenido aguanieve y viento. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He entregado mis despojos a Luismari, hospitalero del Albergue municipal. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mañana más. </div>

TORRES DEL RIO - SANTO DOMINGO DE LA CALZADA<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally I am at Santo Domigo de la Calzada and it is only now after two hour sitting by the heater that I’m starting to feel warm. I’m at restaurant <a href="http://arcayarestaurante.com/">Arcaya</a>, enjoying their wi-fi network, the local wine and a marvellous <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">pincho of tortilla</a>. </div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">This morning it took me a while to set off. It was raining cats and dogs and I was waiting for the storm to pass. At 08:00 it was still pouring but I couldn’t wait anymore. I had to meet Alicia, my sister-in-law at <a href="http://www.golflogrono.es/">Campo de Golf Municipal de Logroño</a>. If I wanted to meet her I couldn’t delay my departure any longer. </span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I started my cycling feeling really satisfied with my equipment. I was warm and dry as the brand maker assured me. However as soon as I passed Viana it started to rain buckets first and it snowed a bit later. It was that much that I soon looked like a tea bag. Without no doubt, my equipment had a limit and mine reached it during the morning. </span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once in Logroño, it took me a while to get to the golf club. It’s on the outskirts next to the Camino. By then I was so badly cold and wet that I didn’t even stop to visit the city. I just pass through the city centre to confirm its charm and beauty but that was all. When I arrived to the golf clubhouse I wanted to die (for the first time today). My hands as well as my knees were shaking. Fortunately they allowed me to take a shower and dry my equipment. Thanks to their kindness my stage didn’t finish in Logroño and I was able to continue my way. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After a strong breakfast, Serrano ham, eggs and chips, I said good bye to my sister-in-law and her nice friends and I set off again. Not sure about what I was facing I headed to Navarrete. Once there, I decided to continue to Nájera where I arrived once again completely soaked. I comforted myself with a hot coffee and when I was about to head to the public hostel, the sun shyly made its appearance between the clouds. I asked a local guy how far was Santo Domingo and he assured me that it was just 20 kms ahead with a tiny slope at the beginning and then a flat and easy way to cycle. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Logically I trusted him and at 13:30 I was riding my bike once again. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
10 kms after leaving Nájera, I kept thinking about the local guy and all his family and not in a nice way. A tiny slope….my ass!! From Nájera to Santo Domingo the road was a continuous uphill. Moreover a heavy snowstorm made its appearance when I was 10 kms far from my destination with 70kms/hr winds and huge fluffy snowflakes. Believe me… they really hurt!! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what was going to be a pleasant walk according to the local guy, it turned out to be a 3 hours long agony. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fortunately, the public hostel is convenient and the village is lovely. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now I need a rest. Forecast for tomorrow is that bad that I'm not sure if I will be able to leave. Pray for the weather to give me a break because I don’t want to stop now. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best thing of the day was the Club de Golf de Logroño and the kindness of the staff working there. I highly recommend to stop there for breakfast or well…..just in case of emergency. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The worst part has been the continuously temptation of giving up. The cold, the cold, the wind, the wind, the wind, the wind, the rain and the snow!! And of course having the feeling that my bike lacks hundreds of gears.</div>
</span><br />
<div>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Esta mañana he tardado en salir. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Lógicamente me la he jugado y me he puesto en marcha a las 13:30. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
No quiero parar ahora. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

PAMPLONA - TORRES DEL RIO<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was 06:30 when my cousin woke me up. I was that tired that I didn’t know where I was. I had a good rest but I could feel the stiffness in my legs. At 07:30 and after having breakfast with my family I set off for Torres del Rio. First through the University and then Cizur. A tiny slope and my legs were about to explote. Maybe yesterday I pushed myself too hard... </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Through muddy paths I headed for Alto del Perdón and a hard penance started for me. When I was about to give in, Carlos a neighbor from Zaraquiegui made a sudden appearance. He was an angel to my hell! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This sort of things is what makes the Camino such a special place. While he was kindly showing me an alternative route to cross the Alto del Perdón, Txumari* from “La Botica de la Abuela” appeared to confirm my madness and to wish me “Buen Camino” of course without any of his famous home-made remedies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To get to the Alto del Perdon summit has been really, really hard. I thought that yesterday I went through the hardest peaks and that the rest to come was going to be a path of roses but to my surprise this stage has been an absolutely torture for my legs. Moreover, the first 45 kms were foggy and cold (4ºC). A continue up and down. It’s been exhausting and bitter cold!!<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875);">I was forced to make a break at Puente de la Reina where I had a <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">pincho of tortilla</a> and a delicious hot coffee at Café Bar Very. Consuelo, the waitress was lovely and attentive. Everything was wonderful and only for 2€! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next stop along the way was at Estella. The historic city centre is a jewel and worth the visit. Sadly it was too early for the bars to be full of <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">pintxos</a>. So without a bite to eat I headed to Bodegas Irache, a famous vineyard halfway the Camino. I wanted to check if the famous <a href="http://www.irache.com/fuente-del-vino.php?idioma=1">Wine Fountain</a> really exists...and it does!! According to the rules you can drink to calm your thirst but you can not bottle the wine. If you want a bottle of wine there is a shop where you can buy it. After 40 kms of distress, fog and cold I’ve arrived exhausted and thirsty and naturally I helped myself...well actually I made myself at home. I’m really glad to know that there are still people in the world with a generous heart! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At 14:30 I arrived to Los Arcos just a few minutes before passing out. Thank goodness I’ve found a bakery, Orgipán that happened to have a bar within serving Menú del Peregrino. 11€ for five starters and five mains to choose from. I went for the spaguetti bolognese and <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">rabas de calamar</a>, a <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">clara de limón</a> and a glass of local wine. It’s perfect! It has given me enough energy to face the last kilometres of the day towards Torres del Rio. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Suffering is the word I’d choose to summarise this stage although thanks to Carlos, Txumari, Consuelo and Mario from Bakery Orgipán I have reached Torres del Río. Breathless and completely knackered but I did it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The worst thing about today is the pain in my botton and my legs. The best is the mix of loneliness and suffering that invites you to think about life carefully. It’s just two days but I’m starting to understand the secrets of the Camino. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">*Txumari Alfaro is a naturalist and expert in alternative medicine. He used to conduct some programs on TV where he talks mainly about home-made remedies and healthy lifestyle. He’s from Navarra and lives close to the Camino. </span><br />
_<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969);">_______________________________________________________________________</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Aunque he descansado bien noto las piernas cargadas. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Machacante... y congelante! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tras 40km sufriendo, con niebla y frío he llegado exhausto y sediento y claro, me he saciado. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Reventado, pero he llegado.

SAINT JEAN PIED DE PORT - PAMPLONA<div style="text-align: justify;">
6:30 in the morning. Today there is no need for the alarm-clock. I haven’t slept a wink. Yesterday, with the pilgrims I met in the hostel, we went for dinner to <a href="http://www.saintjeanpieddeport-paysbasque-tourisme.com/fr/restaurants/restaurant-la-vieille-auberge-chez-dede#.UQxOqo5EOkk">Chez DeDé</a>. 12,90€ for a <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">Menú del Peregrino</a>. The food was fine but not as good as the one you get in Spain. </div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My first stage ahead and the first summit “Alto de Ibañeta” (1200 m.) command me respect and fear. By my reckoning in 4 hours and a half I should be in Roncesvalles. The eagerness to start, the rest I’ve enjoyed the last days and the promise of seeing my family again gives me wings. My average climbing speed is 12 km/h. I can’t believe it! By the way, the weather is glorious! I'm surrounding by snow but the temperature is amazing.</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It’s 10:30 and I’m arriving to Roncesvalles. In the hostel where I stopped to stamp my pilgrim passport, I’m told that some journalist from the "Diario de Navarra" were here yesterday interviewing some of the crazy pilgrims who risk their lives walking the Camino in winter time. Three days ago some Korean pilgrims were rescued with hypothermia signs and trapped in the snow at the top of “Alto de Ibañeta”. It was impossible for the fire and rescue service vehicles to get to them and they finally were rescued by a helicopter. </div>
I din’t think it twice and I called the "Diario de Navarra" and talked to Iván Benítez, the journalist who made the interviews. We agreed to meet at Burguete at 11:30. The interview only lasted a few minutes but enough to get him interested in my story. Such was the interest that my story will hit the news next Sunday...it’s already been in the news three times! Well, and on the TV too...make it four!<br />
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This break gave me enough energy to face the last part of the stage. Two more high summits and then a long way down to Pamplona. I wanted to get there on time for having lunch with my family. By 14:00 I was in Pamplona and by 14:30 seating at <a href="http://www.lacasonarestaurante.net/index.html">“La Casona”</a> in Barañain. <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">Asparagus Cojonudos</a>, T-bone steak, <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">cuajada</a> and sorbet of <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">Pacharán</a>. After that, my first G&T as a pilgrim. The 25€ menu that we paid was far more expensive than the average 11€ of a Menú del Peregrino but it was worth it. I highly recommend this place. </div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the evening after a break I went with my family to the “Casco Antiguo” to enjoy a night of <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">pintxos</a>. It was “Ju-pintxo”. Ju from Jueves (Thursday) means that on Thursday night you can get a pintxo and a <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">caña</a> or a wine for only 2€. It was obviously something I couldn’t miss. Estafeta street was so crowded that it remained me of San Fermín. </div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was nothing bad about this stage. On the other hand, the good thing was that I could spend another night with my family halfway through the Camino. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
6:30 de la mañana.. Hoy no ha hecho falta el despertador. No he dormido en toda la noche. Ayer fuimos a cenar a <a href="http://www.saintjeanpieddeport-paysbasque-tourisme.com/fr/restaurants/restaurant-la-vieille-auberge-chez-dede#.UQxOqo5EOkk">Chez DeDé</a>. </div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, I am at Saint Jean Pied de Port. I woke up today in Pamplona and I picked up the bike. It’s beautiful! It’s worthy of being my travel partner in such a unique journey. Thanks Dad! After some small fitting and a long fight over the panniers, I decided to have lunch with my family before setting off to France. We had cuttlefish, hake, good wine and of course “<a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">cuajada</a>” as a dessert. As asparagus from Navarra, everything was <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">COJONUDO</a>!</span> (F***ing good). Sorry for the language but there is no other way for describing this.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We set off before 15:00 and arriving at Saint Jean Pied de Port by 17:00. Lot of nerves, tons of nerves. And after a brief visit to the Pilgrim Office more nerves got to me. I stamped my pilgrim passport for the first time and headed of to the public hostel, the only one open in this season. They showed us the bunkbeds and after a very emotional farewell my Dad and my cousin went back to Pamplona leaving me alone and ready to start my own journey. While I was settling in, other pilgrims arrived. I’m glad to know I’m not the only mental one. There are some others from UK, Germany, Australia and also some Spaniards from Bilbao and Valencia.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It’s being an amazing experience. Everyone has their own story, they come from different places, different cultural and social backgrounds but all sharing the same pasion, being pilgrims.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had dinner together and we talked about the reasons behind our Camino. We laughted, guffawed and even cried. God, this is so emotional!</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Later in the dormitory, they had tried to organise themselves to walk the Camino together. One tried to get away but finally decided to join the group. It remained me of the film “The Way”. I’m a bit dissapointed for not walking with them and knowing them better. I also envy that they have 30 days ahead. I only have ten days and unnacompanied. But this is my Camino. I’m going to enjoy and make the best of it and maybe, just maybe to suffer a bit....mainly because tomorrow the steep slope to Roncesvalles could be memorable. The only thing I need to ask God is for my knee and my back to support me all the way. If they do the job I’ll have a doble G&T as soon as I arrive to Pamplona.</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today, I want to thank Eneko from <a href="http://www.mundoraintxe.com/">Oraintxe</a> in Pamplona. Without your help I wouldn’t be writting right now. The bike goes fantastic!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also a big thank you to Tomás from <a href="http://www.bicigrino.com/en/caminos-en-directo.html">Bicigrino</a>. Thanks to your generous support all <a href="http://cyclesolotheway.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-pilgrim-menus-and-other-issues.html">bicigrinos</a> around the world can now follow my adventure.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And last but not least, thanks to Janine, the 78 young volunteer who runs Saint Jean public hostel. It’s the most lovely crazy person I have found in the Camino yet. The rest, already sleeping, although they are crazy no one is as crazy as you. Thanks Janine for being as mad as a hatter.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow more, now I need a rest if the Valencian guy snoring and Australian guy COPD allow me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kisses for all. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Por fin en Saint Jean Pied de Port. Hoy me he levantado en Pamplona y he recogido la MTB.
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Me ha recordado a la pelicula The Way. A mi solo me quedan 10, y ademas solo.
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Un beso a todos. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">Today, I feel good! It’s true that I haven’t slept a wink for two days but I feel good, really good and somehow relieved. In two days I’ve gone to the toilet more than I usually go in a week. It’s probably the nerves but I have high hopes placed in this Camino and I want everything to turn out well.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">The alarm clock rang at 06:00. I drove my son Juan to school, and by 09:00 we were off to Luton Airport. By 15:00 (Spanish time) I was landing in Madrid. It’s 21:00 LT now and we are finally at Pamplona after a 5 hours journey by car. During this journey I have had the feeling that I have forgotten something. But what was it?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">The winter and cycling solo the Camino set the minimum equipment I should take with me. I can’t give up anything mainly for my own safety. I carry extra kilos not only of personal items but also some extra weight I have put on the last weeks. What a shame! I was so fit and handsome!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">I’ll spend the night with my dad, my aunty and my cousin. We’ll eat, drink and laugh because that’s what we are in Navarra for. Tomorrow, I’ll pick up the bike, I’ll check that everything is OK, I’ll pack the panniers and I’ll travel to France. There I’ll be looking for the Pilgrim Office where I’ll get my first stamp on my Pilgrim Passport. After that I need to find a place </span>in the public hostel <span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">to spend the </span>nigh so <span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">I can get ready for my first stage. That will be the hardest one.......and by then I will realise what that thing I was forgetting was.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">Any suggestions will be appreciated now that I still have some time left.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">Good night and a big hug for all of you. I’ll now drink a very well deserve glass of Spanish wine.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">Cheers!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;"><br /></span>

<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">P.S. I’m already stressed out over all the things I still have to do tomorrow...and the day after that!</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hoy me siento bien.
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div>
We see often numbers all around. They are everywhere. We need to read, to write and to relate them. Mental maths is important. We all know about numbers. Some of us are good, some others are bad. Some quick, some others slow. Performing fast mental calculations will help us immensely irrespectively of which field of life we deal with.</div>
You will be amazed knowing that during a minute reading this post 255 babies were born. In the same minute 141 million of emails were sent and 775,000 searches made in Google. Our world is truly an amazing place.<br />
Every minute Twitter sees 98,000 tweets. 695,000 status updates and 540,000 comments are published on Facebook. 600 videos are uploaded to Youtube.<br />
Thanks to you we are now part of those numbers. We are one of these things happening in a minute. Thousands of tweets, thousands of Facebook updates, thousands of blogs updates. Among them all it's us, it's you, it's them.<br />
We are now just a small part of those things happening in a minute, but an important thing.<br />
A three days old Blog and over 700 visits. Visits from everywhere. From Hong Kong, Qatar, Thailand or Portugal. Simply amazing! Some of our visitors are friends, some others not. Some have already made donations, some others don´t. But they all are part of this challenge. It's your challenge. It's their challenge. Let's involve everyone, let's make this challenge viral!<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Coming back to numbers, every minute another 78 people are diagnosed with cancer. Now it's up to you to spend another minute thinking about what you've read today. Please donate, it will take you less than a minute.</div>

<div>
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Cada minuto Twitter gestiona 98,000 nuevos tweets. 695.000 actualizaciones y 540.000 comentarios son publicados en Facebook. 600 videos son subidos a Youtube.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br />

I finally have found today my MTB shoes´ covers. <br />
I been really busy, doing nothing relevant but busy. Time goes by quick and still do not know whether I´m ready or not, but my equipment is.<br />
5 days to go and some people are still asking me to explain why this challenge, why The Camino & why UK Cancer Research. Last time this afternoon when buying my shoes´ covers. Being Spanish but living in United Kingdom, fundraising for a British Organization but cycling in Spain, getting donations either in pound or euros, even writing simultaneously in both languages simply mess things up.<br />
Some people just think The Camino is simply another way, path, bridleway, or cycling route, but it is not. It does not matter the reason because pilgrims walk the Camino but they all agree on the fact that it changes your life. I do want that change, and I do want to help changing others´ lives.<br />
We also need to think global. We live in a world with no borders. Today we are in Spain, tomorrow somewhere else. Research does not know about borders either.<br />
Why the Camino & Why UK Cancer Research? Hard, very hard to answer. Fortunately an image worth a thousand words. I do hope that from now on my choice is more clear.<br />
<br />
1. Why fundraising UK Cancer research:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://1.gvt0.com/vi/jWuyPi_nuJE/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jWuyPi_nuJE&fs=1&source=uds" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jWuyPi_nuJE&fs=1&source=uds" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Why The Camino:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/o5VZKWcgw6c?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
We simply don´t choose a life, we live one. I want to live a life in which <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #222222; line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">research beats cancer. It is time to think big, start small and expand fast!</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #222222; line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><i>Mendi</i></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><i><br /></i></span></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><i>______________________</i></span></span><br />
<br />
Todavía me encuentro preparando mi Camino. Finalmente he encontrado unos cubre-botas para mis zapatillas de "mountain bike".<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Necesitamos una mayor amplitud de miras. Vivimos en un mundo sin fronteras. Hoy estamos en España y mañana en cualquier otro lugar. La investigacion tampoco conoce fronteras.</div>

Two months since we started to work in our Just Giving website. Two weeks since we officially launched the site. One week since our Twitter account and one day since this blog. The closer I am to start my trip the more busy I am; but it worths the effort.<br />
I did not know how expensive is fundraising! Every single day I realise that I need a new piece of equipment, luggage, new tools or even clothes. I went yesterday to Oxford to buy a pair of Thermal Bib Tights that I have successfully tested today. It is still f..... cold and windy. Now that my legs are ok my feet hurt. After two hours cycling I simply don´t feel the tip of my toes. They become purple and stiff. Besides I have tried to find proper MTB shoes covers for a long time I haven´t succeeded yet. Never mind! I feel I´m getting used to this extreme weather conditions. However, no pain no gain!<br />
On the other hand I´m not very much in all these social apps like facebook, twitter and blogger. It takes me ages to update them all, and I do confess I´m a little bit lazy. Fortunately my wife is of a great support, so do my children. Special thanks to my sister in law Alicia for her "tech support". She is addicted to all this apps. They all are helping me a lot with all this stuff.<br />
Lots of emails, phone calls and donations. I got the feeling that we are doing something great.<br />
We started this project from the scratch. Knowing nothing about fundraising and we all have built upon, becoming larger and popular.<br />
I´m becoming really popular indeed, not as much as my son Nacho in the High School, but sort of. It´s not only my neighbours asking for this project but also the local newspaper published an article about my challenge.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jWrT2nDp6UQ/UQA-raVYcCI/AAAAAAAAAO8/8sjliM2YCvk/s1600/773774_200261690112186_1110390186_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="353" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jWrT2nDp6UQ/UQA-raVYcCI/AAAAAAAAAO8/8sjliM2YCvk/s640/773774_200261690112186_1110390186_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
... and even BBC Radio Producer Mr Pete Betswick finds this fundraising of general interest. He wants me to be interviewed by Mr Bill Heine next Sunday morning in "Next on" when he reviews Oxforshire´s week and talks to people that matters. <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p001d7tf">http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p001d7tf</a>. Quite bit of a shocking! To my great surprise it looks like I matter. I know I don´t, but let´s take the advantage of this great opportunity to publicize this fundraising. As I like to say, the more people know about it, the more donations we will get and therefore more cancer´s fighters will beat this illness. If popularity means that we will have more donations, I do confirm I want to become popular!<br />
Coming back to the weather forecast I need to find those shoes covers. I will have another try tomorrow in London.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Muchos emails, llamadas y donaciones.
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

Today we start the countdown for this amazing project. It's just a week to set off for Spain where I will collect my bike and the equipment I will carry with me. </div>
<div>
Being honest I do confess I'm starting to be a little bit nervous. Just few days ahead and I do not know whether I am 100% ready. I've been training hard these last weeks and the last snows have showed me that this challenge might become extraordinarily tough because of bad weather conditions. The forecast is worsening in the north of Spain. It is not snow, cold, rain or even thunderstorms. It is an Explosive Cyclogenesis! Therefore I might encounter rapid creation of cyclones often associated with major winter storms along The Way. </div>
<div>
However let's think positive. Your support have overwhelmed me. It is only seven days to go and I am honestly excited with this challenge. My mission is not reaching the £2000 target but to not complete until I get to Santiago de Compostela. Paraphrasing one of the scrips of the movie "The Way" (Emilio Estevez 2010), we don't choose a life, we live one! We all have lost relatives & friends to cancer. This is not only a homage to them but to those fighting the disease right now. Together we can help them beating cancer. Research into treatments is vital and to cooperate with those working on it is simply my way, "<i>The Way</i>", the only way we all have to help we all for a better future. </div>
<div>
¡Buen Camino a todos!<br />
<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3eYtWjsGTH8/UP6fAFld2XI/AAAAAAAAAN8/yZzqCPpGHWU/s1600/chami_peregrino.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3eYtWjsGTH8/UP6fAFld2XI/AAAAAAAAAN8/yZzqCPpGHWU/s320/chami_peregrino.jpg" width="220" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
No sólo nieve, frio, lluvia o incluso tormentas.
<div>
No obstante, seamos positivos. Me he visto abrumado por vuestro apoyo.
<div>
¡Buen Camino a todos!<br />
